Current Mile projects
Here is a quick summary of what we are currently involved in:
Take-a-Break
A weekly parent and toddler group on Thursdays 10-11.30am during term time at Maybridge Community Church. It provides free play, craft and singing for the children; a warm welcome and support for adults and refreshments. A small charge per child/family is made. Occasional social evenings for parents are also arranged.
The Advice Centre
A drop-in, anonymous and confidential service (no appointments) where trained advisors from the Citizens Advice Bureau give advice and we provide a warm welcome and refreshments. It runs every Wednesday from 10am - 1.00pm at Maybridge Community Church.
Handshake
Re-launched following the merger of the Community-Link project and previous project callled Handshake, the new project brings together both aspects of befriending and practical help for Maybridge residents. Help is provided by volunteers for a period of time to assist in small ways with the varying circumstances faced by local people. This might include home visiting, gardening, DIY, going out to activities to meet new people or similar things. Self referrals are now welcomed, as well as referrals from other organisations. For more information on this new project, contact Gay Jacklin here at the Mile Project office.
Community Teas
Held on a Sunday afternoon 3-5pm at Maybridge Community Church as an event for mainly older people who may be experiencing isolation. The teas are planned to happen 6 times a year and each tea is themed with organised activities, entertainment and food.
In the past we have run:
Baby Clinic - A weekly drop-in for parents to come together, get to know other local parents and bring their babies and toddlers to be weighed and have access the health visiting team for advice and support. The baby clinic still runs every Wednesday 10.30am – 12 noon at Maybridge Community Church, but is now operated by the Children and Family Centre in partnership with the health visiting team rather than by the Mile Project.
'Kickstart Breakfast Club' - an award winning special breakfast club which ran between 2002 and 2008 at the Orchards Middle School. Arguably our most ambitious project to date!
'Milentos Club'- we have run five 10 week programmes for parents and children of First School age which help to develop confidence, learn new skills, make good choices, build esteem and understand relaxation and nutrition. Expertly led by Jane Vrettos from Milentos Ltd
'Fusion' - an After School Club for 8-12 year olds for two years
'Fuse 1' and 'Fuse 2' - Two long term transition groups for pupils who may find the change from First to Middle school challenging or Middle to High School challenging. Intensive!
'Community Link' - Practical help for needs such as DIY, gardening and shopping in our local community.
'Handshake' - Our original befriending scheme for local adults with mental health problems.
'Street Dance' - a project in partnership with Worthing Borough Council for teenagers who wanted to learn this form of dance. The group successfully performed across the County in dance and youth events
‘Money Matters’ - a course in partnership with the Citizens Advice Bureau for local people to increase their skills in managing money
family fun days and BBQs
and more!
